THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST IN WRITING FOR US!

About ENGAGE! Magazine

Welcome, and thank you for showing interest in writing for ENGAGE! Magazine.  We are a not-for-profit fan run e-magazine that showcases our love for all things Star Trek.  We also pay homage to all of the Actors and Production professionals that have put so much work into this amazing franchise.

We would be happy to add you to our Writing Team!  It is important to note that, as a not-for-profit, we cannot make any profit off of this magazine.  It is a FREE benefit that we create for the members of the Star Trek Family as a thank you for being part of this wonderful community.  No one who works for ENGAGE! is paid for their work.  It is ALL VOLUNTEER.  We do this to show our love for Star Trek, and to show our love for our fellow Fan Community.

If you are okay with the volunteer nature of our staff, please read below to see how our process works.

Our Process

Every month we select a theme for each Issue.  All of the main articles and features will pertain to that theme BUT we also publish any articles, on any topic, series, character or episode.  So if the main topic is TNG and you want to write an article about VOYAGER, thats ok!

WRITING PROMPTS

Each month we come up with a pre-generated list of Article topics that you can choose from.  You can volunteer for any of them by sending us a message in the Writer's Chat or by sending me a DM.

WRITER's ADMIN PAGE

We have an Admin area of our website (which is password protected) for the Writer's Team.  You can log in at any time, see the upcoming issues, and look at the available writing prompts.  If you see one that you like, just send us a message!

PROPOSE YOUR OWN:

You can also propose your own article ideas or topics at any time.  You enjoy the freedom of writing whatever you want about Star Trek.  From your favorite episode to your convention experience this past weekend.  Maybe you write poetry, or create fan fiction.  The bottom line is we want you to have fun and enjoy the writing experience.

WHAT DO WE ACCEPT:

  • Episode/Movie Reviews

  • Convention news / experiences

  • Character Analysis

  • Book/Comic Book Reviews

  • Interviews with Trek Actors/Production Pros

  • Opinion pieces

  • Fan Fiction (no shippers please)

  • Fan Art

  • Poems / Song lyrics

  • pretty much the sky is the limit!

WORD COUNTS:

Word counts generally vary, and we aren't strict on them like some outlets are.  If you can't make it as long as you'd like, or if you end up being longer than expected - that's ok, don't sweat it!  The list below is what we're usually looking for in terms of length:

  • Main Feature articles -- 2,000-3,000 words

  • Articles -- 1,500 - 2,000 words

  • Book / Episode / Comic Book Reviews -- 1000-1500 words

  • Fan Fiction -- 2,000 words or less

  • Convention News -- 1,500 words

FORMAT:

Articles should be sent to us in MS Word format (*.doc).  No PDFS.  We use AP style, and we have a style guide for all your questions.  Our Writer's Style Guide will be available to read in the Writer's Admin page as soon as you join!

DEADLINES:

We do have deadlines for articles each month, which will be made clear in the Writers Chat group and on each individual Issue on the Writer's Admin page.

We are flexible a little in terms of deadlines - we know life happens, and life comes first sometimes.  The fact that you are volunteering your time in the first place is very appreciated.

SUBMISSIONS:

All finished articles should be submitted via e-mail to: EngageSubmissions@yahoo.com

EDITING PROCESS:

After you have submitted your articles, they will be handled by our Submissions Manager who then sends them off to our Editing Team.  The Editors will look for grammar, spelling, structural issues, and to ensure that the article aligns with our Style Guide.  Once the edits are complete, your article moves over to the Production Team for final publishing.  â€‹â€‹â€‹

That's all there is to it!

If, after reading all of this and you are still interested in joining the volunteer writing team, please send Mark Sickle a DM on Facebook Messenger letting him know.

Next Steps:

1. Mark will add you to the Writer's Chat group on FB Messenger and introduce you

2. A link to the Writers Admin page, and password, will be provided along with what Issue we are now working on and where to find the writing prompts for the issue.

3. Volunteer for your articles or propose your own, and off we go!

4.  HAVE FUN with your writing!  The bottom line is we want this to be enjoyable for you as well!
